What is a CSA?
A CSA consists of a community of individuals who pledge support to a farm operation so that the farmland becomes a community’s farm, with the growers and consumers providing mutual support and sharing the risks and benefits of food production. Members, or “shareholders”, of the farm cover the anticipated costs of the farm operation and farmer’s salary and share in the risks of farming, including poor harvests due to unfavorable weather or pests. Growers generally receive better prices for their crops, and are relieved of much of the burden of marketing.
Why should I join a CSA?
Joining a CSA allows members to share in the bounty of the farm’s harvest and represents a commitment to growing and consuming food grown close to home without the use of synthetic chemicals that pollute our soils and waterways. Shareholders also enjoy meeting with friends at their weekly pick-ups, swapping recipes, and volunteering at the farm together.
How long is the CSA season at Norwell Farms?
Norwell Farms CSA pick-up begins the end of June and runs through to October.
What will I get each week in my share distribution?
A share consists of a selection of seasonally-available vegetables harvested once weekly. The shares fluctuate depending on the time of year and the crops in season. Click here to see a New England Harvest Chart that will give you an overview of the timing of local crops.
We provide choice and variety within the share as much as possible but will have limits on certain crops as supply dictates. We also try to introduce lesser known varieties of vegetables throughout the season to give members a chance to try new things.
Is it okay if I share my share with a friend?
Yes. If you would like to share a CSA share with friends or neighbors that is fine with us. Please be aware, however, that this is something you are doing on your own. The farm will have one person on record as the shareholder. That person will be financially responsible for the share. When picking up your share either have only one party come each week under shareholders name.
Is the produce organic?
Norwell Farms uses organic growing methods. We do not use any synthetic chemicals in the form of pesticides, herbicides, fungicides or fertilizers. If necessary , we may apply organically approved materials. We have not begun the process to obtain USDA organic certification that typically takes 3 years. Organic certification is a lengthy and expensive process and is often unnecessary for small farms, especially CSAs, where customers are local and they can come to the farm at any time to volunteer, observe and ask questions. If you have any questions about the methods we are using at the farm, we encourage you to come to a volunteer day or send us an email.
What can I do to help out and become more involved at the farm?
There is plenty of work to be done throughout the season and we would love to have your help! Please see our Volunteer page for volunteer opportunities and drop in hours.
