Meet Our Chickens

We just welcomed our new batch of baby chickens for the farm.  Since our chickens are used in our education programs they must be friendly and winter hardy breeds.

why we select Winter hardy breeds:

In general chickens do well in cold weather (they are covered in feathers after all), but chickens with specific body traits like large combs or wattles or small body mass tend to suffer from the cold northeast climate.  There are many breeds of chickens available but the types of chickens recommended for cold weather should have:

  • Large body mass
  • Small comb
  • Small wattle

In addition to being cold hardy, most backyard chicken owners want to have child-friendly chickens and good egg layers.  We used this criteria to select the breeds for our chickens at Norwell Farms.
